The Apology I Will Never Give

There are moments in life when we are expected to apologize—not for mistakes we’ve made, but for existing in ways that make others uncomfortable.

We are asked to soften our voices, downplay our victories, and dilute our presence so others can feel bigger in comparison. The request is rarely spoken outright—it hides in the raised eyebrow, the tight smile, the awkward silence after we’ve dared to take up space.

I have learned that some apologies are not mine to offer. To give them would be to diminish my truth, to shrink myself for someone else’s comfort, to agree—without words—that they were right to want me smaller.

I will not apologize for my ambition.
I will not apologize for my voice.
I will not apologize for my joy.

I will not apologize for claiming space in a world that has spent centuries demanding that women stay small, quiet, and grateful for scraps.

Some things are not negotiable.
My existence, in its fullness, is one of them.
